Transportation Management 101

Every business that produces a product needs to have a transportation management system as part of its logistics strategy. Without this, the company may find itself facing serious revenue loss due to poor transportation of goods to their intended brokers, middlemen, and down to their consumers. The lack of a management system of this kind often results to poor branding, poor product identification, and poor marketing. Consumers will then tag the product as unreliable.

From a bird’s eye view, transportation and the way it is managed is segregated into three stages only. The first is planning on the type of transportation and how it will executed. The second is the actual execution. And the third is the measurement of how well the execution went through and how effective the plan was. Once these stages are carefully laid out, it may then be said if one type of approach is not applicable or if it was not done right. In many instances, only experience will tell what is acceptable or not.

There are many organizations that offer solutions to transportation management problems. These companies have been in the industry of logistics for years and they often promise to reduce the costs for transportation. In reality, any businessman who is engaged in his own company’s activities need not procure the services of such companies unless his own company is gigantic in market scope. However, if the business is just local, one simply needs to identify the pain points why the transportation of goods for his own product is ineffective. This may have something to do with poor planning or poor execution. Most often than not, people just need someone to lead them.

In transportation management, one should consider what type of transportation is the most cost-effective. Many people make the mistake of using cargo ships to transport goods from one place to another. Apparently, it is a lot cheaper to transport the goods by land. In most cases, it is also faster to travel by land and less hazardous, as the trucks are not prone to sinking down the sea.

Other businessmen use outsourcing methods to transport goods. This is an effective way of managing goods transportation only if the outsourced service provider can deliver the expectations in a timely manner without compromising the quality of the goods delivered. There are many trucking agencies and companies that offer trucking services at a low cost. However, one should not forget that these trucking companies must also know how fragile the goods are and in what condition they should be delivered. One mistake in handling a certain type of good will render it practically useless. Only then will a businessman realize that what seemed to be an effective way of transport has become his cause of financial loss.

In effect, one should not always focus on cost of transportation. An effective transportation management system is something that can integrate all the needs of the company and its consumers to ensure that goods are brought to the market.

Are There Lucrative Jobs In Logistics?

In a word, the answer is a resounding YES!

Logistics basically refers to the procurement, transport, upkeep and substitution of materials and people. In layman terms, logistics is all about the transport of people, goods and resources in the safest and most efficient manner possible. So, logistics is not a single event. It is a chain of events ranging from acquisition and management of materials to storage, transportation and distribution. So, jobs in logistics could be in any of the applicable services, including but not limited to third party logistics and managed warehousing. Specifically, jobs in logistics include:

• Material manufacture and production
• Purchase management
• Supplier management
• Material management
• Inventory management
• Warehousing activities and
• Customer service.

Over the course of years, jobs in logistics have become more and more remunerative. The reason is simple. Efficient and cost effective supply chain procedures can directly affect the bottom line of any company. It can also have a major impact on customer and client satisfaction, thus impacting the growth of the organization.

In the majority of cases, graduates with a degree in management training find their way into the logistics and transport sector. A management training scheme allows individuals to opt for a preferred area of work like transport management, for instance. Of course, whether you get the job you want depends on the number of vacant positions and your own performance in the training program.

The second option, and the more popular one, is to apply through a recruitment firm. While recruiting employees for the various jobs in logistics, recruitment firms have a set number of criteria in place. The first is qualification, of course. Specialized roles will require specific skills, like engineering. Most firms want people with excellent analytical skills, IT knowledge and people management skills. These days, people with an interest in the environment are finding a huge opportunity in this field. A postgraduate qualification is not a must, but it is a definite advantage because it makes you eligible to join higher up. It also makes progression easier and faster, because when all things are equal, companies tend to go for the person with better academic qualifications. That said, even graduates from any degree background can find openings while applying for jobs in Logistics.

Recruitment firms are quite rigorous with the selection criteria because there is enormous pressure on them to deliver the highest standards so companies can easily achieve greater customer assistance levels. So, candidates need to excel in decision making, cost effectiveness, project management, people management and client satisfaction skills. Candidates also need to have good communication skills, so they can interact well with clients, members of the senior management as well as staff working in the factory. Of course, a flexible attitude with the ability to do as much hard work as needed will see you rise in the ranks faster.

With enough experience under your belt, you can easily become a logistics consultant who is contracted by companies that want to introduce a logistics program or improve their current performance.

Machinery Transportation – Tips For Choosing the Right Transportation Team

If you’re in a business where you require interstate transportation of heavy and delicate machinery or if you’re a company which supplies others with machinery, you should know what a bother it is to find the right contractor team out there. Since the costs and the risks of damage are quite high, choosing only the best logistics company is vital for your business to grow. In the next lines we will cover the most important rules in choosing a trustworthy company. We will also go over some of the tips and warnings. An especially busy place where Machinery Transportation takes place is in Australia and the cities of Melbourne, Perth, Victoria or Sydney. There are hundreds if not thousands of companies out there eager to transport your machinery to their destination. Unfortunately only few of them are completely reliable and are sure to provide you with all types of quality services at a reasonable cost. Since machinery is very expensive, hard to produce and requires a lot of care to deal with you have to pay much attention to the transportation partners you choose. A good way of finding a good and reliable company is by searching for one with a good reputation. Asking around different companies who had their machinery transported safely or just search for reviews and feedback for the company you think might provide you with quality transportation should help you find just the one you need. A quality transportation company should provide many services to its customers, not just the transportation of goods but also the storage of goods, insurance for the loads carried, custom clearance, supervision, et cetera. A reliable company should be able to deliver your goods on-time, without any damage, time and distance not posing a problem. Finding a company which offers you such services or even custom services is vital for a good partnership. You should check the equipment that is used in transporting your machinery, old or broken machinery might slow the transportation down or even cause damage to the load. Experienced contractors should have their own equipment and vehicles. They should use heavy forklifts, cranes or even helicopters to transport your goods to their destination safely. You should also talk with your transportation company about insurance for the goods carried. After choosing the right transportation provider, you need to create a project schedule for the contractor team, giving them all required information such as essential dates and locations. The logistics company should give you the option whether to transport the whole cargo or smaller parts at a time. Of course transporting the whole cargo is cheaper but also riskier since if an accident were to happen the damages would be much greater. The cost of transporting heavy machinery depends on many things such as the time limit required and the distance until the destination. Also factors like weather or climate conditions and geological occurrences will affect the price of the transportation. Also the dimensions of the machinery and its complexity should have an effect on the price they are going to ask for. You should also make sure your contractor is going to take care of all the necessary permits and documents, if you don’t want to spend a lot of time doing it yourself. You might also need a special permit from the police. As a conclusion, machinery transportation is a very sensitive and delicate industry and requires only the best team of contractors and the best equipment to make sure no damages will appear. Logistics, Logistics Management, Worldwide Logistics

Welcome to my blog! I am Padmanaban, fortunate to work in the industry of Logistics and Freight forwarding in Chennai, India for over 18 years. My blog shall cover major topics like Air Freight, Sea/Ocean Freight, Ware housing, Role of transportation in the industry, General Logistics Management and Customs House brokerage. In today’s post I shall be discussing why the olden days of Freight Forwarder has gone to become a Freight Logistics Provider. They both have any difference? Oh Yes, in many ways. Freight forwarders were architects for different modes of transports. They would typically embrace the “do it all by yourself” attitude. In this process they would lose focus on their core competency of providing uncompromising forwarding service to the clients. On the other hand a Freight Logistics Provider would rather provide a range of value added logistics service by collaborating with multiple agencies that are typically masters in their field. They would enable and use the power of Information Technology to provide information that is critical to the clients in knowing the status of their cargo. For this modern communication techniques like SMS and email are used in their quest to keep the clients informed. By saying “collaborating with multiple agencies….”, do I mean that we need to outsource certain functions in the process. Yes, indeed. Why should one outsource? Outsourcing comes with a huge advantage of utilizing other professional expertise at a fraction of cost that one might otherwise spend to acquire that expertise. It is as simple as that. If I am good in Forwarding, then I would rather tie-up with professional warehousing companies, transportation companies etc, and would manage the forwarding rather focused. That is the power of outsourcing. Where there is a chance of doing freight forwarding on a truly global scale, one has to rely on other vendors in the other country for a better grip of the market and formalities / regularities specific to the country where the cargo is being forwarded. How Transportation Analysis Will Result To Logistics Management

To determine what seems to be causing issues with the order-cycles in every business establishment involved with marketing goods—perishable or non-perishable—it is important for transportation analysis to be conducted. This study aims to measure associated costs to the freight business that hampers the delivery of stocks. In many major industries, the most common problem that shoos customers away is the absence of the product itself—commonly referred to as out of stock. This happens because freight and cargo are facing several barriers and roadblocks—pun unintended—that keep them from distributing goods in a timely manner. In the United States, there are several groups dedicated to this kind of endeavor, one of which is the Strategic Freight Transportation Analysis or SFTA. The aim of this is to extensively gather data and use these data to improve freight movement. This study aims to maximize existing roads for usage of freight and analyze choke points that severely impair the movement of cargo and goods. This is also aimed at analyzing effectiveness of costs and at checking if a possible partnership between the government and the private sector can be made to meet its goals. Among the many studies conducted, the most important is the analysis of the point of origin and the final destination of the cargo. This provides a rough sketch of what seems to be causing the delays in freight deliveries. This involves not only goods but also resources, such as minerals and mining products. Also called an OD study, origin and destination study focuses on surveys from trucks to find out key points on freight movements. Once these data are gathered, extensive action plans may be made. This includes interview sessions and surveys to truck drivers, reaching about 28,000 participants or more. The study is focused on a state-wide basis to ensure accuracy of targeted data and not confuse it with the truck and freight movements of other states. The numbers obtained in this study will then translate to adequate roads and correct road plans by the government. This issue, when addressed, will certainly alleviate the growing concerns of companies and will improve business logistics in terms of service delivery. Other than this, it is a fact that all databases will lapse. What used to be accurate information before is no longer accurate now. Therefore, inaccurate numbers used will significantly impact decisions made and these decisions are going to wreak havoc on the freight industry. There is a necessity—which everyone acknowledges–for data analysis to be accurate and updated. As a final result, a study and analysis of origin and destination not only affects businesses but also private citizens. Private citizens will be assured that there will be safe roads for them. Other than being safe, the roads will be efficient in terms of structure. As a final note, the only persons allowed to do a freight movement analysis are professional Civil Engineers. This is to ensure that all people involved in the study are reliable and independent. After all, a transportation analysis and its results or the roads built based on its findings will last for more than 50 years. Reverse Auction For Transportation And Logistics

Traditionally, logistics and transportation are extremely important for successful operating of any company as well as the whole market at large. It is necessary to point out that, as a rule, the main goal of producers and sellers, as well as buyers, on the other hand, is to minimize costs for transportation and logistics and deliver goods to customers in possibly shorter terms. In the current situation, a variety of tools is used to achieve this goal. In this respect, it should be said that innovative technologies, especially IT, computing, Internet, etc., are playing increasingly more important role and are commonly used to facilitate transportation and logistics. As a result, auctions, using an electronic reverse auction platform, are growing to be popular and widely spread. First of all, it is necessary to point out that electronic reverse auctions have a lot of advantages compared to conventional auctions. Nonetheless, in order to better realize their efficiency, it is necessary to dwell upon the most significant ones. Primarily, it should be said that electronic reverse auctions may lead to a successful cooperation between producers of different goods to transport to various destinations and carriers. Naturally, it is logical to wonder what both producers and carriers benefit from such cooperation. It is worthy to note that this may lead to increasing of speed of transactions since producers receive not only the possibility to sell their goods but, at the same time, they have got a possibility to find a carrier that can deliver the goods to the destination. In such a way, two operations could be run simultaneously that seems to be extremely beneficial for sellers, i.e. producers. Furthermore, it is necessary to underline that the reverse auction provides producers with the possibility to choose from a large amount of carriers. In such a situation, the essential conditions for open and fair competition are created since producers can choose carriers on the basis of objective principles identical for all participants of the auction. On the other hand, carriers can supply their services to a large number of sellers and, consequently, can also easily find their potential customer. Moreover, the open competition stimulates carriers to the improvement of their services and it may also result in certain decrease of costs of transportation for producers. Also, it should be said that the implementation of new technologies, notably electronic reverse auctions leads to the implementation of high technologies in transportation and logistics at large. Moreover, it also opens new perspectives for reverse auctions since, being based on electronic platform, they can involve unprecedented amount of participants. Consequently, the probability that producers will find their clients and carrier, which will transport the goods to the destination at possibly lower costs, increases. Thus, taking into account all above mentioned, it is possible to conclude that the implementation of electronic reverse auctions leading to better cooperation between producers and carriers perfectly demonstrates the possibilities of new technologies applied to business at large and transportation and logistics in particular.
